Strengthening Your Immune System

In today's generation the majority of us are exposed to television at an early age. We are exposed to commercials and advertisements that teach us to take cough syrups, powdered vitamin packets and an assortment of pills or syrups that relieve congestion and other cold/flu symptoms. I myself was a victim to this mentality for the majority of my life, masking my symptoms when I got sick rather than getting to the root of the problem, my weakened immune system.

There are several things you can do to strengthen your immune system and maintain it to avoid going through these low moments in life, or at least minimize the amount of them. Things like maintaining a healthy, well balanced diet and exercising are commonly known to keep the immune system strong but there are several other things that can be done as well. It is important to supplement your body with essential things like vitamins, antioxidants and minerals that support a healthy immune system. 

Most people tend to resort solely on vitamin c when it comes to supplementing the body to strengthen the immune system, but neglect to research exactly how this antioxidant helps. If only taken when sick, vitamin c in fact does little to nothing in regards to helping fight the cold or flu at hand. It is something that must be consumed daily and consistently in order to contribute to strengthening the immune system. Zinc however, can be supplemented during the start of a cold and help boost the immune system effectively. Green tea, garlic, berries and citrus fruits all contain high amounts of antioxidants that aid in this strengthening as well. 

Of course it is always important to contact your local wellness center or healthcare provider as well. They may recommend a variety of services that may surprise you. One common service is a chiropractic adjustment. This adjustment focuses on correcting the spine of any misalignments or subluxations that may be hindering your immune system from functioning at an optimum level. When your nervous system is functioning correctly it communicates to the rest of the body at higher efficiency and allows the body to heal faster and better fight infection. 

Taking care of our bodies is important and researching different ways of optimizing health and wellness is easier than ever. So put down the DayQuil and grab something that will get you up and running. There is no reason you should fear getting sick if you are taking the correct precautions and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
